ROLE REVERSAL AS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TEACH SENIOR CITIZENS 1-on-1 Computer classes foster inter-generational connection in Windsor, CT
Senior Citizens, the fastest growing population, are often uncomfortable with computer technology and the Internet. To address this need, Technology101s has launched classes adapted to the needs of seniors to conquer their fears and find new activities in basic computing and the Internet.
Student Volunteers from Windsor High Schools assist Senior Citizens 1-on-1 to help them feel comfortable with basic computing. The program pairs every Senior Citizen with a Windsor High School Student. As an added bonus, this inter-generational connection helps strengthen the local community.
The first sessions on February 24th and March 10th cover basic internet immersion and searching. Future classes include email, online chatting, photo sharing, and games.
"This new intergenerational pilot project offers one-on-one instruction to senior citizens of all skill levels to help them become comfortable finding their way on the Internet," explains Deborah Maccarone, Curriculum Supervisor of Fine Arts and Career and Technical Education for the Windsor Public Schools. "We value our partnership with local businesses and the expertise they can share with our students. We hope to expand this project in the future to enable larger numbers of local residents to become more proficient on line." Local sponsors of the program include Subway Restaurants in Windsor, Gold’s Gym, and Clayman Law Firm.
Technology101s was founded in 2009 to ensure every person has the knowledge and confidence to use a computer and the internet comfortably. The vision of the program is to replicate these classes in every town in Connecticut.
